We are proud to announce the successful completion of a comprehensive Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) seminar at our Law Office, aimed at empowering our personnel with critical life-saving knowledge and practical skills to respond effectively in emergency situations.
The seminar was delivered in two sessions — on Saturday, 15th of March, and Saturday, 5th of April — from 09:00 to 16:00, by dividing all personnel into two groups to ensure optimal engagement and hands-on participation.
The training was led by Mrs. Lenia Mina, a qualified first aid instructor of St John Ambulance Cyprus, who brought professionalism and enthusiasm throughout the sessions.
Course Overview:
The Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course is designed in accordance with the standards and guidelines provided by St John Ambulance and it is tailored for nominated first aiders in smaller or lower-risk workplaces, where a thorough understanding of immediate emergency response can make all the difference. The course aims to meet workplace regulatory requirements and equips participants to handle a range of medical emergencies with confidence. While the training covered all the essential theory, it was distinctly hands-on and interactive, offering our team the opportunity to apply their learning in realistic scenarios.
Participants were trained in both the theoretical framework and the practical application of first aid, including the opportunity to perform techniques on one another under guided supervision. This practical element enhanced their understanding and built confidence in administering care when it truly matters.
Covered topics included:
• The role and responsibilities of the emergency first aider
• Assessing an incident using the “Assess – First Aid – Get Help” model
• DR ABC principles (Danger, Response, Airway, Breathing, Circulation)
• Communication and casualty care
• Primary survey and managing an unresponsive adult
• Adult resuscitation (CPR) including the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) – theory and pad placement
• Recovery position – practical demonstration
• Recognizing medical alert tags and conditions
• Choking (airway obstruction): how to identify and respond to partial and complete blockages
• Seizures/spasm episodes and how to respond appropriately
• Shock (including causes and symptoms)
• External bleeding: identifying and treating both minor and severe cases
• Burns and scalds
• Fainting and common sudden illnesses
Throughout the day, participants worked in pairs, applying first aid techniques such as CPR, the recovery position and emergency scenario assessments on one another, ensuring that theoretical concepts were internalized.
We extend our sincere thanks to Mrs. Mina and St John Ambulance Cyprus for their professionalism, and to all our team members for their participation and enthusiasm. This initiative reinforces the commitment of Soteris Pittas & Co LLC to fostering not only professional development, but also a culture of safety within our workplace.
